Kid talk
Scout has been talking a lot more lately. She's putting phrases together much more easily, and her vocabulary is growing everyday. Some of her favorite phrases are "Kickle me" (tickle me), "Daddy home!", "No Daddy go", and "G care me" (G scared me, which is never true). She recently came to me whining, "G ra me". I couldn't figure it out until G said casually, "I growled at her. I said 'ra'." Silly girl. I am a little concerned, though, that several of her phrases sound like Yoda. For example, "I'm cold" comes out as "Cold me", and "I fell" is "Fall me". Maybe I should have read to her more....
Garrett's conversations are becoming much more clever, and he makes an effort to be funny, although I don't think that's always his goal.
He saw me drinking a glass of wine and asked if he could have some, knowing what the answer would be. I wanted him to know that it wasn't like coke or something sugary, so I said, "No. Wine isn't good for your growing body." To which he responded, "But it's good for your getting old body?" Thanks, G.
He recently told me an elaborate story about how there are little people living inside his body. He explained that sometimes they start throwing buckets of water out of him, and that's when he pees. Random.
Today, I caught Scout unrolling the toilet paper. When I told her not to do that, Garrett piped up, "Yeah, because if she wastes it all, then the man who makes toilet paper will have to cut down all the trees!" My little conservationist. He's also the one who cries if I throw away a jar of peanut butter instead of washing it out and recycling it, because I'm not "taking care of God's earth". I never claimed to be totally green, just mint green.
Before their bath one night, Scout starting screaming about a "bee", which ended up being a silverfish. I did the logical thing and rinsed it down the drain. Again, my lover of all of God's creatures started crying (real tears) about how it's too dark in the drain for the silverfish, and that they were starting to be friends. Then, he uttered a sentence I never thought I'd hear my child say, "I can't believe you rinsed my friend down the drain!"
Out of the blue in the car last week, "I love corporations."
And, at my parents' house, after asking if the reason he kept requesting that someone accompany him to the bathroom was because he was scared, "No, I just need someone to entertain me. I never like being unentertained." So true.

Thanksgiving
We spent Thanksgiving at my parents' house again this year. They gave us a special gift by keeping our kids at their house for three days before Ryan and I got there. It was the first time G and Scout have stayed overnight anywhere without us, and, though we were a little concerned, they did great! They didn't ask about us once, and everyone had a great time. Here are some pictures from our Thanksgiving dinner, with headgear provided by Garrett. He made a "turkey leg hat" at preschool, and we each took turns wearing it and saying what we were thankful for. Garrett was quick to reprimand us if we didn't "but most of all, for God."

Bye-bye Murries
Our dear friends the Murries recently moved, and we were so sad to see them go. We've lived in the same city twice, and we hope to in the future again. Our kids have become good friends, and it was the first time that Garrett really understood that one of his friends was leaving. He cried when I said that they'd maybe come for visits, saying, "I don't want them to visit. I want to have playdates!"
We've loved having you close, and we'll miss you terribly, Murries!

G's surgery
Garrett had to have a little outpatient surgery about a month ago. He was really excited, and spent the pre-op time grilling the doctors and nurses about how to use every instrument and device. He chose root beer for his flavor of anesthesia gas, and took his Blue Bunny for company during the procedure. When the nurse asked him if he was scared, he scrunched up his nose and said, "Why would I be scared?" He was in surgery all of about 20 minutes and was happy to enjoy popsicles and Gatorade afterward. The only part that upset him was the removal of the tape holding the IV in place. He also got to choose a sticker for himself on his way out and was sure to get a Hello Kitty one for Scout. At his recent post-op appointment he was sad to hear that he wouldn't get to do it again. Sweet and silly boy!

Halloween
We started Halloween with a family fun day at our neighborhood park. We ate and let the kids play games. Scout made friends with a great dane, and Garrett hit a tennis ball with a pirate. Next, we walked around the Natural Gardener nursery and saw farm animals and fun gardens.
Our friends, the Greenes came over to trick-or-treat, and it was great. Our neighbors went all out with haunted houses, graveyards, witch potions and giant mousetraps. We dropped off the daddies and girls, and took the boys out again to cover more ground quickly about halfway through the evening. Both were dressed as Batman, and they had fun ringing the doorbell, hiding, and then jumping out to scare the person answering the door. We finished the evening with UT football, which we've come to learn is one of Scout's favorite things to watch. It was a fun night!

Halloween Party
Yes, it's December, my house is decorated for Christmas, almost all of the presents are purchased, and I'm just now blogging about Halloween. One day, this blog might become a priority that I can manage to keep up with, but, for now, it's more like sweeping the leaves off my front porch - I know I'd be happier if I kept up with it, but I always seem to be behind.
Anyway, we decided to go forth with our annual Halloween party, even among the debris of a house renovation. Luckily, this holiday lends itself to dilapidated, old houses. Our friends did not let us down with their costumes this year, and the kids were all really cute. Our table was spread with all manner of spooky dishes, including eyeballs and severed fingers. Ryan and Hudson led the kids on a hunt for bones in the greenbelt behind us, and a few kids found a real bone. I'm hoping it belonged to a deer.
Thanks, spooky friends, for making it another fun party!
